CARS Conversations July 2014

You could say that John Clendaniel was born for Extension work. A native of Kent County, Delaware, John has always had an interest in agriculture; he grew up on a farm and, for the majority of his career, he has held jobs in the agriculture industry.

John is a 1995 alumnus of Delaware State University; his class was the second to graduate after Delaware State College became known as Delaware State University. Now, he is employed by DSU and is engaged in the field of work that he knows best—agriculture!

Before working for DSU, John partnered with his father in an agriculture equipment business. For 10 years, they sold sprayers, spreaders, and equipment parts to various companies. John then worked with another company for three years that caused him to work away from home. After he and his wife, Kim, became parents, John began searching for work closer to home.

Before his current position as Farm Management Specialist with DSU Cooperative Extension materialized, John politely turned down previous positions that were on soft money. After discussions with former dean, Dr. Kenneth Bell, John accepted a securely funded position with Cooperative Extension.

John wears a variety of hats. In his position, and as agriculture program leader for Cooperative Extension, John plans and conducts meetings, workshops, and conferences to assist farmers with current issues. He is charged with coordinating the efforts of faculty and staff who provide outreach education to Delawareans in the areas of farm management, crop production, marketing, and business planning.

Away from work, John leads the efforts of The Delaware’s Children’s Theater Inc. As president, he is involved with overall management of the organization, stage management, set construction, and all things behind the scenes. John also loves to travel with his wife Kim and daughters Kaitlyn and Jenna (his twin). One of their favorite places is Frontier Town in Ocean City, Maryland.

What John enjoys most about working at DSU is the family atmosphere. “It’s a fun place to work, surrounded by a lot of great people. It has its highs and lows, but it’s really an enjoyable place to work.”
