The Delaware State University Police Department employs both sworn and non-sworn personnel. Non-sworn personnel include Dispatchers and Security Officers, who are essential in providing support to the everyday functions of our Police Department. Physical Agility Test

The Physical Agility Test is conducted to assess the overall fitness of an applicant to include their strength, endurance and cardio. An applicant must successfully meet all requirements of the physical agility test to continue in the hiring process. Requirements are dependent on the position sought as well as an applicant’s age and gender.

Oral Board Interview

The Oral Board Interview measures a candidate’s ability to communicate information or ideas to other people. Each candidate is allotted thirty (30) minutes to answer the interview questions to the best of their ability. An Oral Board Interview consists of a panel of at least two (2) Delaware State University Police Department employees.

Written Examination

The Written Examination is a timed exercise that contains questions related to reading, writing and arithmetic. Prior to the administration of the test, you will be afforded 25 minutes to review several pages of information and commit the details therein to memory. The examination itself consists of 100 multiple choice questions that test your memory, grammar, reading comprehension and basic mathematical skills. A period not to exceed 1 hour and 45 minutes is granted to complete this exercise.

Background Investigation

All applicants for employment with Delaware State University Police Department are subject to a criminal history check. Any felony conviction is automatic disqualification. Any criminal activity that would be considered a felony under Delaware law, federal law, or the law of the state in which the activity occurred is a disqualification. Applicants must have all prior criminal arrests expunged before being hired. Arrest or conviction for all other crimes and offenses are subject to evaluation.

Any prior use of a hallucinogenic drug, will be an automatic disqualification. All other drug use, including illegally using prescribed drugs, is subject to review.

In addition, applicants for the positions of Police Officer and Security Officer must possess a valid driver’s license and at least one year of driving experience. An applicant with a prior driving suspension or revocation must have one year of reinstatement in order to be eligible to apply. Any alcohol-related driving arrests and overall driving history will be subject to review.

Conditional Offer

Following successful completion of the aforementioned stages of the hiring process, if selected, a candidate for the position of Police Officer will receive a conditional offer of employment. Applicants will then undergo a comprehensive medical examination, eye examination, psychological examination, and a final physical fitness assessment.

  • No physical deformities which would be detrimental to proper performance of police duties

  • Visual acuity of not more than 20/200 corrected to 20/20 in each eye
  • Ability to distinguish between red, green and amber
  • No pathology of the eyes
  • Possess depth perception
  • Shall possess normal hearing in both ears

Training Academy

Successful completion of police training in the State of Delaware (or equivalent training acceptable to the Delaware Council on Police Training) within the first year of employment is required. This comprehensive training is approximately six (6) months in length and takes place either at the Delaware State Police Academy or the New Castle County Police Academy. Studies involve a wide variety of topics including defensive tactics, laws of arrest, criminal procedures, search and seizure, emergency vehicle operations, first aid, verbal judo, computer science, firearms proficiency, cultural diversity and crisis intervention. Upon successful completion of the academy, the police officer will undergo twelve (12) weeks of Field Training.
