2016 Mass Comm Day – Article and Photos

DSU’s Department of Mass Communications held is annual symposium, this year entitled “Cracking the Color Code: Increasing Minority Presence and Opportunity in the Media.”

Commonly known annually as “Mass Comm Day,” the daylong event was kicked off by keynote speaker Stacey Evans Morgan, TV and film producer/writer, most notably of the “The Parkers” a television show that ran from 1999-2004.

This year's Mass Comm Day included the induction of a new class of Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society members.

Throughout the day there were a number of panel discussion sessions on a diverse variety of contemporary mass communication topics. The panel discussion were led by a number of visiting media and communications professional – 25 of which were alumni of the DSU Mass Comm Program. The day was culminated with a job fair.

A highlight of the day took place during the luncheon, as the Department of Mass Comm presented its inaugural Michael J. Feeney Distinguished Alumni Award to HBCU sports commentator Omarr Bashir, Class of 1996, and public relations and communications professional Dawn Jones Roberts, Class of 1992.

The award was established to honor the memory of Mr. Feeney, Class of 2005, a New York City journalist and a 2010 NABJ Emerging Journalist Award who passed away at age 32 on Jan. 31. At the time of his death, Mr. Feeney was slated to begin a new job as an entertainment reporter for CNN.com in Atlanta. Ga.

Mr. Feeney’s mother Reba Willis, his sister Maria Feeney, and his cousin and DSU alumna Dawn Tennent traveled from northern New Jersey to attend Mass Comm Day and present the awards.
