Dr. Derrick E. Nelson Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Derrick E. NElson Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor Dr. Derrick E. Nelson, a fallen hornet.
Derrick Nelson, a high school principal at Westfield High School in New Jersey, passed away on April 8, 2019, after having undergone a procedure to donate bone marrow to a 14-year-old boy in France. Nelson, who was known for his generosity and community service, told the Westfield student newspaper before the procedure: “If it’s just a little bit of pain for a little bit of time that can give someone years of joy, it’s all worth it.”
A lifetime of service: Nelson served as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve for more than 20 years. He began his career in education in 2002, first as a teacher, then as assistant principal at several schools, including Westfield, before becoming principal at Westfield High School. He was a proud and dedicated lifetime member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.
This scholarship will support students who are either an education major or a member of Delaware State University’s ROTC who have demonstrated selfless acts of kindness.
