DSU to Present Gospel Musical “Crowns” April 16-17
DSU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences will present the student production of the gospel musical “Crowns” in three performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16 and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, all on the stage of the Education and Humanities Theatre on campus.
“Crowns” is a moving and celebratory musical play in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young Black woman who comes to live with her grandmother. The production – written by playwright Regina Taylor and based on a book Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry – is billed as a dramatic experience filled with soul stirring music, dancing and shouting.
Under the stage direction of Rev. Dr. Shirlyn Henry Brown and musical director Tannah Morris, Crowns features student actors, Dana Matthews as Wanda, Jamie Gage as Jeanette, Jasmin Walker as Orisha, Bria Borders as Velma, Jahselah White as Mabel, Courtney Porter as Yolanda and featuring Ebony Dorsey as Mother Shaw. The production also stars Tyrone Ashley and DeVontay Phillips.
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, and free for DSU students. Tickets will only be sold at the door. The box office will open at 6 p.m. and seating will begin at 7 p.m.
