DSU’s Sheed Itaman Selected for Prestigious NSF Fellowship

The National Science Foundation has named DSU graduate student Sheed Itaman as a recipient of its Graduate Research Fellowship.

Mr. Itaman, who is currently enrolled in DSU’s Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience Master’s Degree Program, has been selected for his research proposal entitled “Aging Neurons: The Balance Between Calcium Ion Flux and Cell Death.

Mr. Itaman – whose graduate advisor is Dr. Michael Gitcho, assistant professor of biological sciences – plans to achieve a Ph.D. in neuroscience and establish his career in biomedical research.

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program is to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science and engineering. The program provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant achievements in science and engineering.

This is the first time a Delaware State University student has been the recipient of this highly competitive and prestigious award.
