AN UPDATED MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT – April 19

While the investigation in the April 18 shooting incident on campus continues, the University can report that three victims, all non-DSU students, are in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The event was well attended with a significant portion of guests coming from the surrounding community. I am pleased with the cooperation of our students and the orderly way in which they followed the direction of University staff, dispersed from the event and returned to their residential halls.  This assisted University officials in ensuring the safety of our students.

The safety and security of all our students, faculty and staff are a priority and, as such, we are and will continue to do those things to make this a safe environment to study, live, and work. The DSU Police Department remains on full alert and continues to patrol the entire campus. We also have 24 hour identification checks in place and only one entrance open.  Along with our great team of public safety professionals, we believe that the campus and its residents are safe.

The April 18 shooting incident is still under active investigation by our DSU Police Department. In addition, the University is also aware of a second incident that took place at 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 19.  In that incident, shots were reportedly fired in the area of the University Courtyard Apartments. There were no injuries in that incident and it is also being investigated by University police.

On Monday morning, the University will resume its normal operations and classes. I am confident that the campus is safe and will continue to be so as we move toward the end of the spring 2015 semester and the May 17 commencement ceremony.

A Message from DSU President Harry L. Williams – April 18

Earlier this evening, at approximately 8 p.m., a shooting occurred on the DSU campus during an annual University-sanctioned student Greek cook-out event.

There were three victims who were injured in the shooting. They were all transported to Kent General Hospital in Dover and are reported to be in stable condition.  The identities of the victims are unknown at this time.

The student residential population has been directed to stay in their residential halls. Non-DSU individuals are being directed off-campus.

This is currently an active investigation. No arrest(s) have been made as of 11 p.m. on April 18. The safety of our students continues to be paramount and our police will aggressively continue their investigation until an arrest or arrests are made in this shooting incident. DSU campus police are the lead agency investigating the incident. The Dover Police Department, Delaware State Police and other agencies are providing assistance.

Anyone with information concerning this matter should contact the DSU Police Department at (302) 857-7911.
