Four Delaware women were recognized for their achievement at the First Lady’s Hats and Gloves Tea, an annual community event and DSU fundraiser hosted by Dr. Robin Williams, the wife of DSU President Harry L. Williams.

Honored with the 2017 First Lady’s Hats and Gloves Tea Award were:

Dr. Lozelle De Luz – Award-winning entrepreneur, publisher and educator.

Bernice Mitchell Edwards – Executive director of the First State Community Action Agency.

U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester – The first woman and African-American to represent Delaware in Congress.

Mary Maloy Scott – A DSU alumna (Class of 1955) who went on to become the first African American to serve as the superintendent of the Smyrna School District.

The 2017 First Lady’s event was held as a fundraiser to benefit the DSU Honors Program, an earnest University endeavor that challenges students with exceptional intellectual ability, motivation and commitment by offering new levels of academic excellence in scholarship and creativity.

About 400 women (and a few men) attended the event, which was held in the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center. Talented students provided the entertainment – which included the DSU Jazz Ensemble, the DSU DeElegance dancers, saxophonist Charles Murrell, soloist Chelsea Taylor, soloist/dramatist Courtney Porter, as well as Jahselah White, who gave a dramatic reading.

In addition, Dr. Robin Williams announced that the annual event would be renamed henceforth as the Margaret L. Oliver First Ladies Hat and Gloves Tea, in honor of the late Margaret L. Oliver, who was the wife of Norman Oliver, DSU alumnus (Class of 1985) and former DSU Board of Trustees member. She passed away in 2015.

Dr. Williams said Mrs. Oliver’s interest in traveling abroad and giving back to communities combined to govern her advocacy for young people.

“She cared about young people and wanted them to be global citizens,” Dr. Robin Williams said. “She wanted young people to be able to travel and be able to compete globally in the job market. That is what we are about here at DSU.”

As part of that announcement, Mr. Oliver presented a donation of $50,000 to DSU to go toward the DSU Honors Program.
