Two new Board of Trustees members sworn in
The DSU Board of Trustees welcomed two new members and announced the appointment of another one during their regular public meeting on March 15.
Acting Board Chairperson Devona Williams swore in new board members Bernadette Dorsey Whatley and Jocelyn Stewart. Dr. Williams also announced the appointment of former Delaware Gov. Jack Markell as a new board member; he will be sworn in at the board’s June meeting.
Appointed by the board, Bernadette Dorsey Whatley is a managing director at JP Morgan, where in a career that spans more than 20 years she has served as an operations manager, chief administrative and communications officer, as well as program manager. Currently she is part of the bank’s Asset and Wealth Management area, where she is responsible for U.S. Private Bank Client Onboarding markets across the East Coast.
In 2017 she was recognized as a Rising Star by the Harlem YMCA Black Achievers in Industry. She has also been honored with the U.S. Volunteer Services Award from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation as well as among Diversity MBA Magazine’s Top 100 Under 50 Diverse Executive Awardees.
Born and raised in Delaware, Ms. Whatley has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and an MBA, both from the University of Delaware. She also holds a Series 99 license.
Appointed by Gov. John Carney, Jocelyn Stewart is the director of community investment for Barclaycard US. Since the founding of the company in 2000, she has worked to achieve Barclays’ community goals by developing its community strategy and managing its volunteer and financial resources. Prior to joining Barclays, Ms. Stewart worked for First USA Bank where she founded and led its Events Marketing Department, which generated over one million new credit card accounts per year.
Ms. Stewart is the chair of the board chairperson for Teach for America Delaware, the vice chair of the East Side Charter School, a trustee for Christiana Care Health Services and has served on a number of State of Delaware committees.
A graduate of the University of Richmond (Va.), Ms. Stewart has a bachelor’s degree in the double majors of Economics and Studio Art.
