University holds Solar Energy Workshop

Sunday, July 16, 2023

Delaware State University moved closer to being able to offer A DSU Renewable Energy Certificate Program with the completion of a four-week workshop involving a group of high school and University students.Workshop student build an energy efficient house, complete with solar panels.

The Photovoltaic Solar Energy Workshop – supported by Delmarva Power – was held from June 10 to July 14 in which the students learned some of the finer technical points of solar energy. Four students were from different four high schools in the First State (including one from the University’s Early College High School) and six were Delaware State University students representing a diverse variety of majors.

During the workshop, the students received solar energy training involving lectures, labs and a model-efficient mini solar house project. The workshop group visited the Delaware Electric Cooperative Sussex Solar Farm, Delaware, and received a farm tour. The students were also enriched by presentations from Delmarva Power representatives.

As part of the training, the students constructed an energy efficient, solar-power model house, as well as created and presented research posters. All of the students received a workshop certificate upon the program’s completion.

Dr. Gabriel Gwanmesia, Professor of Physics/Engineering and workshop instructor/coordinator, said workshop helped provided a better understanding of the training the University would offer for Renewable Energy Certificate.
