DSU Speech Contest winners

The University recently held its 12th annual DSU Speech Tournament sponsored by the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences and its Law Studies Program, as well as the Delaware Barristers Association.

This year’s contest topic was three pending civil rights challenges and how the next presidential administration should handle them. The contestants were judged on content and delivery in a three-minute oration.

The winning students and their prizes were:

  • First Place: Nila Mills, sophomore Elementary Education major; $600.
  • Second Place: Jaymen Morris, freshman, Mass Communications major; $300
  • Third Place: Ranyah Bullock, sophomore, Mass Communications major; $150
  • Fourth Place: Awasung Moma, freshman, Financial Economics major; $150
  • Honorable Mention: Sydnee Fairweather, junior, Mass Communication major; $50 (l-r) Jordan Perry, Esq.; Vernon Vassallo, Esq.; and Quamaine Montgomery

As in previous years, the judges came from the Delaware Barristers Association and included Jordan Perry, Esq., Assistant County Attorney for New Castle County, Del.; Vernon Vassallo, Esq., Associate Attorney with the Wilmington law firm of WhitbeckBennett; and Quamaine Montgomery, a third-year law student at Pennsylvania State University’s Dickinson School of Law.
