Why Constitution Day Matters

Constitution Day, on September 17th, is a time to reflect on the document that lays the foundation for everything we enjoy as citizens—especially our right to vote. As we head into an election year, it’s not just about voting for the president. Local officials—like mayors, city council members, and school board reps—also play a huge role in shaping the laws and policies that affect our daily lives.

Our motto at DSU is “It All Matters,” and when it comes to upholding the Constitution, this couldn’t be truer. It’s important to know your rights, get engaged, and have your voice heard.

Why Your Vote Matters:

There’s more to voting this year than just choosing a president. Public safety, local budgets, and school policy are all impacted by local politicians. You are influencing the direction of your local community when you cast your vote for these positions. The Constitution’s guarantee that the government serves the people is upheld and strengthened by voting.

Ways You Can Honor Constitution Day:

  • Know your rights: Take a few minutes in learning about the protections afforded by the Constitution.
  • Become a voter: Are you registered to vote? Make sure you’re prepared for the upcoming election.
  • Do your homework: Just like your course work, learn about the candidates, not only those running for national office but also those locally, as they truly impact your neighborhood.
  • Motivate others: Tell your friends and loved ones how crucial their votes are.

This year, casting a ballot for selecting a president is important, but it goes beyond there. Local government representatives have an impact on public safety, local budgets, and educational policies. You have the power to influence the direction of your local community by casting your vote for these positions. Your vote will contribute to the survival and strength of the Constitution’s guarantee that the government serves the people.
