DSU’s Department of  Languages and Literature recently received Public Service Award for World Language and Cultural Literacy from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

The award – presented by the ACTFL Board of Directors – recognizes the Department for expanding its TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Program and establishing a Chinese Language and Culture Center in partnership with Xiamen University in China.

The ACTFL also noted DSU’s work with heritage language learners and the University’s partnership with TheDream.US, which provides higher education opportunities for undocumented students.DSU President Tony Allen speaking after accepting the ACTFL Award on behalf of the Dept. of Languages & Literature.

“This event was very significant as this is the premier conference for language education and was attended by over 5,000 world language educators from across the country and world,” said Brody Bluemel, Chair of the Department of Literature and Foreign Languages. “This is a significant acknowledgment that will greatly enhance the efforts of our World Languages programs locally and beyond.”

DSU President Tony Allen accepted the award at the ACTFL’s annual conference held Nov. 22 at the Philadelphia Convention City in the “City of Brotherly Love.”

The ACTFL is an organization of thousands of language educators and administrators from elementary through graduate education. The organization aims to improve and expand the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction.
