Annual Black Male Initiative Conference held at DSU

Thursday, February 20, 2025

Hundreds of high school and college students gathered on Delaware State University’s main campus for the Black Male Initiative Conference, a day of inspiration, learning, and networking. Held every February, the conference included informational sessions on successful entrepreneurship, building wealth, managing relationships, and personal growth.

At the start of the conference, Peter Kamanu, a senior business management student and current BMI president, excitedly spoke before his peers and encouraged them to take the initiative in achieving their goals. “Initiative is the key to success,” Kamanu said. He further emphasized that having initiative can help students get into college and open doors to job opportunities.

Jonte Simmons, a business analyst at JPMorgan Chase, entrepreneur, and Delaware State University graduate, was the keynote speaker at the event. He encouraged students to take the initiative and forge genuine connections with those in attendance. “The flame is lit,” Simmons said. “This is a call to action. When you enter these rooms today, introduce yourself. I had various job opportunities leaving college because of the room you’re sitting in now.”

The conference also touched on trends such as artificial intelligence in business, education, social change, and the importance of managing one’s digital footprint.

A common thread throughout the event was the importance of networking and mentorship. Simmons urged students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. “Being present in the moment and seeing everything this space has to offer is the key,” he said. “Brotherhood is built when you connect and take care of these relationships.”

A highlight of the event was the pitch competition. Eager participants pitched their business ideas for a chance to win thousands in prize money.

The Black Male Conference is sponsored through the generous support of The Executive Leadership Council, WSFS Bank, Travelers Insurance, and Capital One.

DSU’s College of Business coordinated the event with its Office of Student Engagement.
